Whatever the reasons, Penny Arcade's "A Life of Service" took top honors in the webcomic wrapup.

Second place was taken by 2P Start's Level Up!, while Hijinks Ensue's Scared Straight claimed a distant third. A special mention goes to Robot Martini's two great tastes, which came in last place, even though we actually quite enjoyed it. Next week at the Penny Arcade Expo, we've been given a chance to sit down for an interview with PA creators Jerry Holkins and Mike Krahulik (i.e. Tycho and Gabe). While we'd love to brainstorm hard-hitting questions for the two, we suddenly realize we're very lazy people. So please tell us what you would ask the Dynamic Duo and we'll pick out the best quesitons and use them in our interview.

Here are our (admittedly too numerous) picks for the week's best game-related webcomic. Despite (or perhaps because of) the similarities to an episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force from 2004, Penny Arcade's Gears of Conflict Resolution took top honors in this week's webcomic wrapup. We'd also like to take a moment to remind everyone of the 300 "PG" parody, since we still can't stop ourselves from shouting "This is Cake Town" at least once a day at random strangers.

Second and third place go to Ctrl+Alt+Del's Moar Co-Op and Monday Night Crew's Street Dated. ... and we don't mean anything stolen from other Joystiq features. We're just a fan of self-referential webcomics and wanted to highlight Scott Dewitt's Fanboys strip from earlier this week. A flood of Greek letters coming after us is just like those dreams we had in high school the night before our Calculus exams. So it's only natural that 2P Start's The Fundamental Theorem of War bring back intense feelings of elation (or perhaps pain and suffering, if you're not huge math geeks). Fitting for us, then, that it had the highest rate of change from 0, or more accurately, it had the most votes in this week's webcomic wrapup.

Second and third place both went to Penny Arcade with Anguish and For Your Consideration, respectively. Thanks to everyone who voted; be sure to let us know of any game-related webcomics you stumble upon this week!

Read | Permalink | Email this | Comments

SPONSORED BY: Age of Empires III - Real-Time Strategy Game Control a European power on a quest to colonize and conquer the New World. AOE3 introduces new gameplay elements, as well as new civilizations, units, and technologies. http://www.ageofempires3.com/

Ross Miller

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup revisits the classics

Filed under: Culture, Online, Polls, Meta (about Joystiq)

Digital Unrest's Chris Simmons originally made this comic in April 2006, and we subsequently crashed his servers. The strip has bee remade this week with new art and, given that it never got a fair shot last time, we're going to throw it in again this week. Thanks for the trip down memory lane, Chris. Truth be told, we just wanted to point out Cyanide and Happiess' comic, but it wasn't directly game-related. The Webcomic Wrapup doesn't usually get confused for anything except maybe a soundboard for why we have horrible taste in comics or why webcomics in general are the scourge of the internet (and seeing what passes on the internet for entertainment ... wow). Then again, maybe that's our raison d'etre.

As for Joystiq, well, les personnes nous confusé tout les temps. Here are our picks for the week's best game-related webcomic. Personally, we think still drawing comics at 25 would elicit quite a joyful expression. Yeah, we figured the Zero Punctuation would do well in the webcomic wrapup, by a large margin. Here's how it breaks down, with and without the Yahtzee factor:

With the Yahtzee Factor
Given the subject matter of this week's Zero Punctuation, we thought we'd throw Yahtzee into the webcomic poll to see how he fares. Alright, this is getting ridiculous. Activision has yet to respond to our requests for clarification, and anecdotal reports continue to contradict our finding that the Rock Band Stratocaster does not work with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith on the Xbox 360. If you'll consult our guitar compatibility matrix, you'll find that incompatibility is par for the course, so we left it at that. But conflicting reports keep coming in.

Our original tipster, who works for a rather large gaming magazine, tested all manner of guitars with Guitar Hero: Aerosmith but, alas, he was on an XDK - the Xbox 360 debug kit (and no, the above is not Photoshopped, it's a direct screen grab). Perhaps something, however unlikely, has changed from the reviewable code to the final retail code? Even then, we've gotten tips as recently as this morning claiming the Rock Band guitar does not work with the retail release of Guitar Hero: Aerosmith. Frankly, we can't keep track anymore so we'll do the next best thing: power of the masses.

View Poll

Permalink | Email this | Comments

SPONSORED BY: Age of Empires III - Real-Time Strategy Game Control a European power on a quest to colonize and conquer the New World. AOE3 introduces new gameplay elements, as well as new civilizations, units, and technologies. http://www.ageofempires3.com/

Christopher Grant

Readers pick best webcomic: The Inevitable Conclusion

Along with finally confirming Diablo 3's existence, Blizzard also revealed two of the five (or perhaps more) classes, the Witch Doctor and the Barbarian. Although we imagine any returning characters would see a massive overhaul from their previous renditions -- that's assuming the remaining three aren't entirely original -- we want to know who you'd like to see make it into the third game.

View Poll

%Gallery-26348%
(Note: All classes in the game have both male and female options, hence voting D1's sorcerer is the same as voting for D2's sorceress.)

Ross Miller

Weekly Webcomic Wrapup announces Lost Vikings

It turns out Joystiq readers are very smart soothsayers (not that the entire internet didn't see it coming, either through wishful thinking or horribly Photoshopped images "leaked from Blizzard's servers"). When the mysterious week-long splash page started, we asked you to predict the announcement expected at the Worldwide Invitational. Here were your top three answers:

Diablo 3, and it's about time! (43.8%)

Wrath of the Lich King release date (19.2%)

Starcraft 2 release date (8.9%)

Congratulations to everyone who guessed right. And as for everyone else ... hey, what are you complaining about? You still got Diablo 3!
%Gallery-26348%

Permalink | Email this | Comments

SPONSORED BY: Age of Empires III - Real-Time Strategy Game Control a European power on a quest to colonize and conquer the New World. AOE3 introduces new gameplay elements, as well as new civilizations, units, and technologies. http://www.ageofempires3.com/

Ross Miller

Readers pick best webcomic: The Gabriel Method

Apparently putting two Penny Arcade entries doesn't split the votes, but somehow garners Tycho and Gabe with over 50% of the weekly webcomic wrapup's votes.

First place goes to "The Gabriel Method," third place goes to "The Flavor Factor" and sandwiched in-between is Rooster Teeth.
